Pattern Oriented Software Architecture Volume 5: On Patterns and Pattern Languages

Buschmann / Henney / Schmidt, «Pattern Oriented Software Architecture Volume 5: On Patterns and Pattern Languages»
Wiley | ISBN: 0471486485 | June 11, 2007 | 490 pages | PDF | 2.5 Mb

Software patterns have revolutionized the way developers think about how software is designed, built, and documented, and this unique book offers an in-depth look of what patterns are, what they are not, and how to use them successfully.

The only book to attempt to develop a comprehensive language that integrates patterns from key literature, it also serves as a reference manual for all pattern-oriented software architecture (POSA) patterns. The Logic of Concept Expansion

Meir Buzaglo, The Logic of Concept Expansion
Oxford University Press | ISBN 052180762X | 2002 | PDF | 1.31 MB | 193 pages

Scientists and mathematicians frequently describe the development of their field as a process that includes the expansion of concepts. Logicians traditionally deny the possibility of conceptual expansion and the coherence of this description. Meir Buzaglo’s innovative study proposes a way of expanding logic to include the stretching of concepts, while modifying the principles which apparently block this possibility.

He offers stimulating discussions of the idea of conceptual expansion as a normative process, and of the relation of conceptual expansion to truth, meaning, reference, ontology and paradox. He analyzes the views of Kant, Wittgenstein, Godel, and others, paying especially close attention to Frege. His book will be of interest to a wide range of readers, from philosophers (of logic, mathematics, language, and science) to logicians, mathematicians, linguists, and cognitive scientists.

Designing Web Navigation: Optimizing the User Experience

James Kalbach, «Designing Web Navigation: Optimizing the User Experience»
O'Reilly Media, Inc. | ISBN: 0596528108 | June 1, 2007 | 456 pages | CHM | 29 Mb

Thoroughly rewritten for today's web environment, this bestselling book offers a fresh look at a fundamental topic of web site development: navigation design. Amid all the changes to the Web in the past decade, and all the hype about Web 2.0 and various "rich" interactive technologies, the basic problems of creating a good web navigation system remain. Designing Web Navigation demonstrates that good navigation is not about technology-it's about the ways people find information, and how you guide them.

Ideal for beginning to intermediate web designers, managers, other non-designers, and web development pros looking for another perspective, Designing Web Navigation offers basic design principles, development techniques and practical advice, with real-world examples and essential concepts seamlessly folded in. How does your web site serve your business objectives? How does it meet a user's needs? You'll learn that navigation design touches most other aspects of web site development.

This book:
  • Provides the foundations of web navigation and offers a framework for navigation design
  • Paints a broad picture of web navigation and basic human information behavior
  • Demonstrates how navigation reflects brand and affects site credibility
  • Helps you understand the problem you're trying to solve before you set out to design
  • Thoroughly reviews the mechanisms and different types of navigation
  • Explores "information scent" and "information shape"
  • Explains "persuasive" architecture and other design concepts
  • Covers special contexts, such as navigation design for web applications
  • Includes an entire chapter on tagging

While Designing Web Navigation focuses on creating navigation systems for large, information-rich sites serving a business purpose, the principles and techniques in the book also apply to small sites. Well researched and cited, this book serves as an excellent reference on the topic, as well as a superb teaching guide. Each chapter ends with suggested reading and a set of questions that offer exercises for experiencing the concepts in action.

The New Unconscious (Oxford Series in Social Cognition and Social Neuroscience)

Ran R. Hassin, The New Unconscious (Oxford Series in Social Cognition and Social Neuroscience)
Oxford University Press | ISBN 0195149955 | 2005 | PDF | 1.74 MB | 606 pages

The ancient unconscious in Western thought might be traced as far back as the fifth century BCE in Greece, if we define the unconscious as internal qualities of mind that affect conscious thought and behavior, without being conscious themselves. Hippocrates proposed (and Galen elaborated on) four basic temperaments--sanguine, melancholic, choleric, and phlegmatic--that are based on bodily humors and shape behavior in conjunction with rational (conscious) thought.

This same division into unconscious, biologically based influences and conscious, mental influences is echoed in Kant’s thought over two millennia later. He distinguished temperament from moral character, with only the latter enabling people to consciously control themselves and be morally accountable to others. The details of the unconscious mind changed as metaphors for the mind changed over these two millennia, but it was almost always present.
